Doomers: AI will destroy us.

The famous "paperclipping” scenario exemplifies this position: an AI tasked with maximizing paperclips converts all matter (including humans) into paperclips.
Geoffrey Hinton, the "Godfather of AI," notes, "What truly troubles me is that you need to create subgoals to operate efficiently, and a very logical subgoal for nearly anything you wish to accomplish is to gain more power—achieve more control". Since compute scales exponentially and intelligence equals power, AI misalignment with human well-being could lead to catastrophes where humans are treated indifferently.

Gloomers: Things will Get Worse
Gloomers are concerned about the economic, social, and environmental impact of AI. Broadly, they’re concerned that there will be more losers than winners leading to entrenched bias from data sets that excludes much of the developing world; widening income inequality; rising carbon emmissions and water use by AI data centers.
Andrew Ng states that while existential risks are overblown, "The real risks are things like job displacement, bias in AI systems, and the spread of disinformation".
Gloomers ensure fair AI adoption by spotting biases and advocating policies centered on human and environmental well-being.
Bloomers: AI Will Make Things Better
Bloomers see AI as a catalyst for creativity, efficiency, and innovation, fueling revenue through personalized services and analytics while evolving businesses into something bigger. Reid Hoffman asks, "What if AI helps us make scientific breakthroughs, increases productivity, or even frees up more time for creativity and human connection?". Like past technologies, AI amplifies capabilities for equitable progress via testing and risk mitigation.
Bloomers provide vision, inspiring pilots for insights and adaptive strategies to avoid stagnation.
Zoomers: AI Will Solve Our Major Problems
Action-oriented zoomers push rapid AI deployment for prototyping and decision-making, emphasizing "deploy now and iterate" to deliver wins like automated workflows.
Marc Andreessen argues, "AI should be built and deployed as quickly as possible, with minimal interference from policymakers or external constraints". Historical innovation shows acceleration yields abundance, countering over-regulation through market iteration.
Zoomers foster agility and quick wins, but need balance to avoid recklessness in integrated teams.
